Tea and Diet Herbs to Avoid

We have the common notion that tea and so called “diet” herbs are an easy solution for easy weight loss. Tea and others like it are put on a pedestal, hailed as miracle herbs, quick weight loss drinks and other names conjectured by man and woman afflicted with a heavy body mass.

Don’t get me wrong. Tea is said to have three specific functions: it has antioxidants which cleanses fatty substances the body doesn’t need, protects the cells of the body (especially the healthy ones) and destroys free radicals (which are created when the oxygen produces by-products that becomes reactive and absorbs electrons from other cells which may result in tissue damage, cancer, cataracts, a weak immune system and heart damage).

So, tea is beneficial. Which is … good, right? So tea and herbs should be the best solution for weight loss.

Yes and no.

Yes, if you know what safe tea to take. Green tea is the most commonly known tea. It is a natural stimulant with vitamin C and flavonoids (which are also antioxidants). The herb cayenne accelerates the metabolism safely, stimulates digestion, and detoxifies. (This is a bit spicy though, so be forewarned.) These are just some safe herbs you can take.

No because, as with weight loss, certain precautions must be made. There are some substances that you have to avoid, as the FDA has linked these to possible causes of symptoms which if unchecked, may ultimately lead to death. So as much as possible, do not use the following:

- Herbal fen-phen. Why this is still continued is still unknown as clinical trials don’t even prove that they’re working. Medical experts say that misuse of this product may trigger heart palpitations and other heart abnormalities which may cause severe heart attacks, strokes and death.
– Ephedra. This raises high blood pressure, overstimulates the central nervous system (with a possible lasting negative effect on the brain), and increases heart rate. As of press time, it is reported to have caused 2 deaths already. If you see ma huang as an ingredient in a dietary pill, beware: this is the same as ephedra, and the manufacturers only used its Chinese name.
– Herbal laxatives. Most commonly sold as a diet tea. It can cause diarrhea, and extreme cramping. Overuse or misuse of the product may cause your digestive tract to solely rely on the laxative for bowel movement – which only means that your bowels do not function automatically to eliminate waste.

So if you are thinking about losing weight, then take heart. Don’t experiment on stuff that claim to make you healthy and slim in three days. Sure, it might make you slim – but it might make you dead too. Find out what the safest teas are and work with them, if you value your health and your life.
